MISSIONS at BIRMINGHAM UMC

HELPING MAMAS DIAPER DRIVE

This September we are partnering with Helping Mamas to fill their warehouse! Helping Mamas is a non-profit that works with over 150 metro Atlanta agencies to distribute diapers to those in need.

Helping Mamas was founded by a social worker who saw a gap in services. There was no coordinated effort to collect and distribute diapers. After watching moms having to use plastic grocery bags for diapers or washout and reuse disposable diapers, she knew something needed to be done. Today, Helping Mamas serves nearly 60,000 children a year and distributes 2 million essential items to the community.

FACTS ABOUT DIAPER NEED:

  1. Diaper need is the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby or toddler clean, dry, and healthy.
  2. There are 0 federal social programs to address diaper need.
  3. In 2022, the statistic was 1 in 3 families struggle with diaper need. In 2023, that rose to 1 in 2 families with a sharp rise in middle-class families.
  4. 28% of parents have reported skipping meals to afford diapers.
  5. 1 in 4 caregivers report having to miss work or school because they did not have enough diapers to drop their child off at daycare.

The good news is YOU CAN HELP.
Now through Sunday, September 24 we are collecting diapers. They can be open packages (think if your child has outgrown a size) or any size or brand. You can also give online (please select missions) and any money you donate will go directly to Helping Mamas.

At Birmingham UMC, our congregation is active in both local and international missions. This is one way that we make a difference in the world by showing the love of God. For more information about how to get involved in any of the mission areas below, please contact the office.
