At Birmingham UMC, our people are active in both local and international missions, with outreach taking place almost every day. This is one way that we make a difference in the world in the name of Jesus.

Twice a year, a group from BUMC goes to serve the homeless and underserved at Trinity Table in downtown Atlanta. This project takes many volunteers, serving in various ways: Some volunteers donate food items. Some donate time to prepare the food items to be served. Then, about 25 volunteers go to serve.

Thank you to everyone who went to serve at Trinity Table on October 15 in downtown Atlanta. Thank you also to those who helped provide and prepare the food. We provided 200 hot meals for underserved Atlantans, as well as provided them with takeaway meals.

A huge thank you to everyone who shopped, packed and delivered shoeboxes in 2016 for needy children around the world. Your efforts resulted in our greatly exceeding last year’s collection. The church collected 316 shoeboxes this year! That’s 316 children who will receive a wonderful gift-filled shoebox along with the message of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Let us remember to keep these children and their families in our prayers.

In February 2016, a group from BUMC traveled to St. Simons Island for a multi-generational mission trip. The result was generations of people coming together at one time, in one place, and experiencing the presence of God as we became the hands and feet of Jesus together.
The weekend was a first for our church, and a huge success. Our members, including participants as young as three years old, visited an elderly residential home where they threw a Valentine’s party, did crafts with residents, and washed vehicles. One woman who had lived there for two years said it was the best day of her two years there.

Walk for Water in March 2015 was a fun, non-competitive event to raise $25,000 to purchase a Living Water Treatment System for a community in Haiti. Manufactured and installed by Water Missions International, each LWTS is a rugged, solar powered water purification system that turns unsafe water sources into clean drinking water for more than 2,000 people a day and lasts for 20 years.
During the Walk, participants carried an empty bucket to the halfway point of the Walk, filled their buckets with dirty water, then carried it to the finish to symbolize the trek women and children make each day to collect water. After the Walk, we had games and educational activities for the kids, music and a cookout.
In developing countries, it is estimated that women and children around the world spend two to three hours each day walking just to collect water. In most cases, the water they collect is not suitable for human consumption.
We walk so that women and children will have safe water close to their homes. This means they’ll have more time to study, more time to tell stories, time to love and care for each other, time to sing, dance and laugh, and time to think about other things besides where they will get their next sip of water.
In May 2016, BUMC celebrated the installation and consecration of the Living Water Treatment System in Merger, Haiti. Watson Escarment from Good Samaritan Haitian Alliance Church of Lawrenceville, GA, spoke in our worship services and shared the exciting news that the treatment system had been installed and was consecrated on Friday, May 6, 2016.

Atlanta Habitat for Humanity partners with working families, sponsors, and communities to build affordable, green, quality homes and to provide support services that promote successful home purchase and ownership. BUMC provides volunteers with varying degrees of skill (from none to tons) to help with the actual build, as well as volunteers to help cordinate and provide meals.
Our most recent project, in 2014 and early 2015, was a new home for the Navarro family. Abigail Navarro is the mother of three girls aged between 3 and 12. God plays an important role in the life of this family.
